VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics signs MOU with ROBOKART – reach partners of E-Cell IIT Mumbai

Report of National Level Workshop on Website Designing Using WordPress and PHP

DSC_0243In continuation of its pursuit of academic and professional excellence, the Department of Computer Science, VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, Margao organized a National Level Workshop on Website Designing Using WordPress and PHP on January 20th and 21st 2017. The workshop was organized in collaboration with Innovation Cell, IIT Mumbai and Robokart. Shree Damodar College has signed an MoU with Robokart- reach partners of E-Cell IIT Mumbai to conduct skill-based certificate courses for students of the BCA programme.

The resource person for the 2-day workshop was Mr. Anurag Mishra, a practicing engineer and researcher at Robokart in the latest trends of Information and Technology. Inaugurating the workshop, Principal, Dr. Prita D Mallya congratulated the Department of Computer Science and stressed the need for such workshops to enhance the employability of BCA graduates against the backdrop of rapidly changing technologies. Welcoming the participants, Ms. Ekta Agarwal, BCA Programme Coordinator reiterated how the demand for E-Commerce websites has generated employment opportunities in recent times.

DSC_0238Thirty-two students along with eight faculty members participated in the workshop. Participants received indepth understanding and hands-on training in website development, particularly e-commerce websites, using WordPress and plugins like woocommerce, meta slider, etc. Mr. Mishra began with creating a simple home page and later moved on to explain how to add different types of products (simple, variable, affiliate, grouped products, etc.), product attributes, taxation, shipping, managing inventory, webhosting and internet security. The participants were also given an assignment to design an e-commerce website. On assessment of the assignment three students viz. 1) Eshani Kurtarkar, Pranita Sawant and Sanika Nagvenkar were selected to undergo paid internship at Robokart in Mumbai.

The participants found the workshop very useful as it focused on practical issues related to web development giving them a competitive advantage over their peers when they step into their professional life in the corporate world. The workshop opened up another avenue – E-commerce Web Development, for the students to consider as an entrepreneurial endeavor.
