Study Tour to Mumbai

The Department of Management Studies organized a study tour to Mumbai from 18th to 22nd October 2023. The journey started with an evening departure via the Konkan Kanya Express with 39 students, accompanied by 7 faculty members namely Snehal Alve, Cinola Vaz, Delisha Rebello, Sushrusha Naik, Jayant Panvelkar, Kanvisha Naik and CA. Anup Borkar.

The first visit i.e. on 19th October was to Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The students had the privilege of gaining valuable insights into one of India’s oldest and most prominent stock exchanges. The informative session was conducted by Dr. Aditya Srinivas, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Economist of the Bombay Stock Exchange Brokers Forum. During the session, Dr. Srinivas provided a comprehensive overview of various key aspects of the stock exchange. He introduced the students to the BSE 30, also known as the SENSEX, which comprises the 30 largest and most actively traded stocks on the BSE. The students learned about the vast scale of the BSE, with over 5400 listed companies and the significance of these listings in India’s financial landscape. After an insightful visit to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the students visited Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Museum. One of the highlights of the visit to the RBI Museum was a captivating documentary that traced the evolution of Indian currency right from its inception. This documentary provided an in-depth look at the fascinating journey of the Indian rupee, highlighting its historical significance and the changes it has undergone over the years. The students also had the privilege to visit NSDL, which holds the distinction of being the first depository in India, established in 1996. During the visit, they learned about Depositories and its role in development of stock markets.

The second day of the study tour i.e. 20th October 2023, proved to be equally enlightening as the students explored the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The students had the privilege of meeting and listening to the current CEO of NSE, Mr. Ashishkumar Chauhan who is also a founder member of NSE. Mr. Muhammad Raza Mulla, a skilled trainer at NSE was the speaker of the session. The speaker began the session by introducing the working of the stock market. He also explained the different terminologies associated with the stock market. He classified trading into four important segments i.e., order, trade, clear and settle. He exhibited the trading screen at NSE based on the online trading platform of NSE, the National Exchange for Automated Trading (NEAT).Continuing with the day’s program, the students were privileged to attend a session conducted by Dr. Tirthankar Patnaik, the Chief Economist at the National Stock Exchange of India. Dr. Patnaik’s 20 years of experience in the Indian capital markets, macro and sector strategy, quantitative finance, and consumer banking were evident as he delved deep into the intricacies of high-frequency trading at NSE.

The third day i.e. 21st of October 2023 was marked by an enriching visit to Xavier Institute of Management & Research (XIMR), a prestigious Jesuit B-school known for providing top-quality management education in Mumbai and the western region of India. The students were given a warm welcome by Dr. (Fr.) Conrad Pesso, a core faculty member at XIMR with expertise in the field of finance. He began the session by touching upon a range of critical topics, including India’s economic trajectory. Dr. Pesso provided a comprehensive overview of India’s economic journey, discussing where the nation is headed, evolution of banks, the case for privatization, GDP components where students gained insights into the components of GDP, including the contributions of the service, agriculture, and industry sectors. The second session was led by Prof. Dr. Sameer Lakhani, an accomplished academician with an array of professional qualifications, including being a CFA charter holder, a holder of the CIPM designation, and an FRM from the Global Association of Risk Professionals. During his session, the students gained insights into a range of contemporary financial and economic topics. Both sessions at XIMR were highly interactive, allowing students to ask questions, share perspectives, and engage in meaningful discussions with the distinguished speakers. The sessions were not only educational but also inspired critical thinking and exploration of contemporary financial and economic issues.

The study tour concluded with fond memories, valuable insights, and a deeper appreciation for the financial and economic landscapes that students explored during their time in Mumbai.
