Session on Self-Care for Teachers

The Counselling Cell organised a session on “Self-Care for Teachers” for all the teaching staff members of the College on July 29, 2021. The Resource Person was the College Counsellor, Ms. Amba Prabhu. This session focused on what is self-care and why it is important, especially for those in the field of academics. Before beginning the session the participants were given a small activity in which they had to write down their daily routine and identify the activities they do for themselves. The Resource Person began the session with discussion on health and its components. She specifically focused on mental health and how to improve it. She also focused on how a teacher’s job can be stressful.

She spoke in detail about self-care, the challenges faced by people to include self-care in their routine. She also discussed reframing the negative statements into positive affirmations. She then went on to explain different areas of self-care.

She also spoke about different myths about self-care. After debunking some myths she spoke about the importance of self-care in our lives and more so in the lives of the teachers. She also spoke about a TedTalk video on Self-Care by Susan Winters. She spoke about three self-care activities – physical activity, stillness and earthing, which if practiced can reduce the chances of physical illnesses and also improve mental health. Lastly a small video was screened on self-care.

The floor was open for participants to share their inputs about self-care and to ask any questions or queries if they had any. The session concluded at 9:30 a.m.  38 teachers participated in the activity.
