NSS Special Camp

The NSS Unit of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, Margao, successfully conducted a 7-day NSS Special Camp from 11th November 2024 to 17th November 2024 at the Shree Saunsthan Shantadurga Chamundeshwari Kudtari Mahamaya Temple, Quepem. This initiative aimed to promote community engagement, holistic growth, and skill development among students, ensuring they became active participants in social development and learned valuable life skills.

The NSS Special Camp was inaugurated on 12th November 2024, with a formal opening ceremony at the camp site. The ceremony was graced by several prominent guests, including Prof. Sanjay Sawant Dessai, Officiating Principal of the college, who emphasized on the importance of social service in student development and the role of NSS in nurturing responsible citizens. Other dignitaries included  Ms. Immaculate Fernandes, Panch Member of Avedem Village, who extended a warm welcome to the volunteers and appreciated their efforts in contributing to the village’s development; Mr. Sanjay Velip, NSS PO In-charge, who briefed about the camp’s objectives, activities, and the role of NSS volunteers in community welfare, Mr. Dewaraj Hirekurabar, the Director of Physical Education and Sports, spoke about the significance of physical fitness and well-being, underscoring the need for holistic development. Other NSS PO present were Asst. Prof. Ainsley Bernard, Asst. Prof. Akshada Gaonkar, Asst. Prof. Kalpana Parab, and Asst. Prof. Pooja Gaonkar.

Throughout the camp, a total of 32 students actively engaged in a variety of activities, including:

  1. Cleanliness Drive: One of the major highlights of the camp was the cleanliness drive organized in the village. Volunteers, participated in cleaning public areas, removing waste, and spreading awareness about the importance of cleanliness and waste segregation.
  2. Yoga and Physical Activities:To promote physical health and well-being, daily yoga sessions were conducted, which were highly appreciated by the students. The sessions focused on both physical fitness and mental relaxation, helping volunteers relieve stress and build focus and resilience.
  3. Guest Lectures: Several guest lectures were organized on topics related to social issues, community development, leadership, and wellness. Experts in various fields shared their knowledge, providing students with insights into the significance of community service and social responsibility.
  4. Cultural Programs:Students also showcased their talents through cultural programs, including dances, songs, and skits, which highlighted the importance of preserving cultural traditions while embracing modern values. These programs fostered a sense of camaraderie and creative expression among the students.
  5. Adventure Activities and Sports:The camp also incorporated several adventure activities such as trekking, team-building games, and outdoor challenges, which promoted teamwork and leadership skills. Sports activities were organized, and students participated in games like cricket, tennikoit, and other traditional games, encouraging physical fitness and teamwork.
  6. Skill Development Workshops:Practical exposure to life skills was a key component of the camp. Volunteers were taught practical skills such as vegetable cutting and food cooking, which aimed to enhance their self-reliance, teamwork, and time management abilities. These activities also emphasized the importance of learning everyday survival skills.

The valedictory function marked the successful conclusion of the NSS Special Camp. The event was graced by Mr. Benjamin Rocha, Headmaster of the School of Symbiosis Shiroda, as the Chief Guest. Mr. Rocha shared his valuable experiences and insights on the importance of service to the community and the role of youth in shaping a better future. The event was also attended by Mr. Bhupendra Dessai, the Sarpanch of Village Panchayat Avedem Cottombi and Chaifi, who praised the volunteers for their contributions to the village’s welfare.

The Officiating Principal of the college, Prof. Sanjay Sawant Dessai, expressed his gratitude to all the volunteers for their dedication and hard work during the camp. He also commended the NSS unit for organizing such a fruitful event that not only benefitted the community but also provided the students with valuable learning experiences.

Expected Outcomes of the Activity

The 7-Day NSS Special Camp fostered community impact by improving cleanliness and raising awareness on waste management, while also promoting students’ holistic development through leadership, teamwork, yoga, and life skills training. Cultural programs, guest lectures, and interactive sessions enhanced their understanding of social responsibilities and traditions. The camp strengthened college-community ties and empowered students to contribute to societal welfare with confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
