National Webinar on “Consumer Protection Act 2019”

The Department of Economics & Banking organised a National Webinar titled “Consumer Protection Act 2019” on 20th March 2021 from 12:00 to 1:20 pm via Google Meet. The Resource Person for the session was Adv. Elton Furtado.

The webinar started with the welcome address by Professor and Principal Dr. Prita D. Mallya followed by the introduction of the Resource Person by Ms. Farah Mendonca, Assistant Professor in Economics and Banking.

Adv. Furtado started the session by quoting Mahatma Gandhi. He explained why the Consumer Protection Act 2019 came into existence, and elaborated upon the objectives and importance of the Act. The basic aim of the Act is to protect and promote the rights of people. The speaker said that any person or group of people could file a case if they find any products violating the Consumer Protection Act 2019. The Act has different guidelines for goods and services and includes the Food and Standards Act.

The last part of his presentation consisted of appeals to state commission, national commission and Supreme Court. He explained the Act by giving lot of examples. The session was very interesting and received very good response. 207 participants from all over the country, comprising faculty members, students, lawyers and the public, attended the webinar.

Ms. Pretty Louiza Pereira   Assistant Professor in Economics and Banking, chaired the Q&A session. Dr. Lira M. Gama HOD of Economics and Banking proposed the Vote of Thanks. Ms. Lizette D’Costa Assistant Professor in Economics and Banking was the compere.
