Live session on ‘Orientation on Mentoring’ for teachers and students

Mentoring has always been a practice of the College; however the concerns are different this year as the students are away from their teachers and friends and are not able to express their feelings and problems. The environment at their homes may also not be conducive for learning, and hence the institution needs to show more concern towards the students.

The Students Welfare Cell organised ‘Orientation on Mentoring’ for teachers across all streams and the students of First Year B.Com/BCA/BBA(FS) and M.Com Part 1 in different sessions from 23rd October to 26th October 2020 as seen in the table. 39 teachers and 168 students attended the sessions, which were held using Google Meet.

The College Counsellor Ms. Amba Prabhu, was the resource person for all the sessions.

Ms. Amba covered the following matters of concern: respect for mentees, guidance to students in setting goals, celebrating mentees’ achievements whether big or small, maintaining confidentiality, taking an interest in the personal lives of the mentees whilst drawing a line. She said that teachers need to speak about themselves and their careers as that would also influence their mentees.

With respect to the orientation for the students, Ms. Amba Prabhu introduced the mentor-mentee relationship to the students, informed them that they can approach the mentor as and when they need for sharing their academic or non-academic problems, and also highlighted that the students should maintain a good rapport with the mentors.

She also suggested that the students have to communicate to their mentors their strengths, weakness, goals and ambitions so that the mentor can help the mentee choose the right path in keeping with their capacity and talents.
