Guest Lecture on Forensic Accounting: Uncovering Financial Fraud

The Department of Commerce & Management at Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, Margao-Goa, organized a guest lecture on “Forensic Accounting: Uncovering Financial Fraud” on 6th February 2025 from 11.00 AM to 12.00 Noon in Classroom No. 206. The session aimed to enhance students’ knowledge of forensic accounting, its role in fraud detection, and its relevance in today’s financial world.

The session was conducted by CA Udhesh Verenker, Proprietor at Udhesh V & Associates Chartered Accountant. With vast experience in forensic accounting and auditing, CA Verenker provided insightful perspectives on detecting and preventing financial fraud. He explained the concept of forensic accounting, emphasizing its significance in corporate governance, financial fraud investigations, and legal proceedings. Various types of financial frauds were discussed, including embezzlement, money laundering, asset misappropriation, and fraudulent financial reporting. Real-world case studies were presented to help students understand practical applications of forensic accounting techniques.

The lecture also covers investigative methods such as digital forensic analysis, financial statement scrutiny, and fraud risk assessment. A discussion on the career opportunities in forensic accounting for commerce and finance students was also shared. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A segment, where students sought clarity on the evolving role of forensic accountants in the corporate world. CA Verenker addressed queries regarding the skills required, certifications, and legal aspects of forensic accounting.

The guest lecture was highly informative and provided the students with a comprehensive understanding of forensic accounting and fraud detection. The session successfully bridged the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications, making it a valuable learning experience. Around 66 students (31 males, 35 females) from SY B.Com attended the session. The session was organised by Asst. Prof. Pooja Shanbhag and Asst. Prof. Prashanti Bhamaikar, Faculty from B.Com Programme.

Expected Outcomes of the Activity

After attending this session, students will gain knowledge on forensic accounting, its role in fraud detection, and its application in financial investigations. They will learn about investigative methods such as digital forensic analysis, financial statement scrutiny, and fraud risk assessment. Additionally, students will be able to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios by developing problem-solving skills through analyzing real-world case studies discussed during the session. Furthermore, they will understand the required skills, certifications, and career pathways in the field of forensic accounting and fraud examination.
