Guest Lecture on Economic Survey and Union Budget

A guest lecture was conducted for SY B.Com students of ‘Economic Survey and Union Budget’ paper on 21st February, 2019 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on the topic of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India.

The resource person for the guest lecture was Mr. Prasheel Kamat, working in SDS Accosphere Advisors, Margao-Goa, an Accounting and Taxation Consultancy firm. He has worked for Vedanta Resources- Sesa Goa Met Coke division for 3 years. He is a B.Com graduate and currently is into CA and CS Final round. The guest speaker was introduced and welcomed by Asst. Prof. Ms. Pallavi Shinde.

Mr. Prasheel Kamat began the session by distinguishing between direct and indirect taxes in India. He informed the students that GST is an indirect tax, which is a combination of VAT and Service Tax. The guest speaker also highlighted the GST tax rates applicable and spoke about State, Central and integrated GST. The resource person also explained the application of GST by giving real-life examples. Thus, the guest speaker presented an overview on the tax structure under GST in India.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Saloni Pattanshetty from SY B.Com A. This lecture was attended by 37 students. The session was interactive, wherein students were asked different general knowledge questions on the topic. The students gave positive feedback on the session as they could develop an understanding of basic features of Goods and Service Tax in India.
