The workshop was conducted for people living in Margao and adjoining areas. Shree Damodar College is a socially sensitive campus always looking forward to make positive contribution for larger benefit of the society beyond the immediate stakeholders of the College. The workshop was the first of its kind in bringing awareness of using online services provided by government departments and other agencies in the country, resulting in citizen empowerment and greater productivity, besides convenience and ease of use. It is also noteworthy that the entire exercise was carried out by students of First Year BCA first year under the able guidance of the BCA faculty members. While planning and organizing the activity, the Dept came out with a list of nearly thirty online services – beginning with how to use basic services like email, online payment of water , electricity ,telephone bills to advance services like net-banking and online income tax return filing – and the  topics were assigned to students for research and presentations.

DCS_001copyInaugurating the workshop and welcoming the participants, Principal of the College, Dr Prita D. Mallya highlighted the Digital India initiative by state and central governments in making all government services available for citizens through websites and how ability to access these online services would help in ease of access and saving time otherwise spent in long queues. Dr Mallya also congratulated the Department of Computer Science, especially the students for taking up such an activity of societal relevance.

The workshop was conducted in the Computer Labs providing hands on experience to the participants. Starting with basic services like online payment of utility bills, students made small presentations followed by demo and helped the participants in accessing those services for themselves. The presentations and hands on were well received by the participants resulting in great appreciation of the programme and demand for more such programmes in the future. At the same time, students inculcated habits of taking initiatives that have immediate impact on our society and also learned leadership, teamwork, and effective presentation and communication skills.
