Workshop on “Women Work & Wellness”

IMG20191214121234The Women’s Cell of the College organised a half-day workshop on “Women, Work & Wellness” for the students and staff members of the College on 14th December 2019 from 10:00a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Ganesh Daivajna Auditorium

07 lady faculty members and 107 students (03 males, 104 females) attended.

The workshop began with the welcome address by the Principal.

The workshop was divided into five sessions. The first session was on the topic “Women’s Rights”. The resource person for the session was Ms Siddhi Parodkar, Assistant Professor of Law, G.R.Kare College. She spoke on issues such as Child Labour, Right to Education, Marriage Act and Sexual Harassment at the Workplace. She also spoke about the Uniform Civil Code in Goa and how it protects women and their rights.

The second speaker was Dr. Jyoti Damodar Redkar, a Gynaecologist by profession. She spoke on the topic “Common Gynaecological Problems during Adolescence”. The speaker focused on issues such as Menstrual pain, PCOD, Irregular periods, Thyroid etc. She also played a video which explained in detail the process of menstruation. Dr. Jyoti also mentioned the causes of problems like PCODand thyroid. She also spoke on the use of contraceptive pills. This session helped students clear their doubts with regards to menstrual issues.

The speaker for the third session was Ms. Prashanti Talpankar, Associate Professor at DM’s College, Mapusa.  She shared her experiences during her detection and treatment of breast cancer. Ms. Prashanti spoke about the moments that she had to pass through during her treatment as well as the type of treatment she underwent.  She discussed about the support that one needs when undergoing through such sicknesses and shared some of her good memories.  She stressed on the importance of regular self-body checkup which helps one in identifying the unusual lumps in the body parts. The session was very interactive.

The fourth session was on the topic “Sustainable Menstrual Habits”, by Ms. Althea Fernandes, President and Founder of Young Women Christian Association (YWCA), Goa and Dr. Minaxi Panandikar, Gynaecologist at Hospicio Hospital, Margao. Ms. Althea Fernandes, who is an alumnus of the College, stressed on the need to do away with sanitary napkins in order to keep the environment clean.  She shared the harmful effects of sanitary napkins on the health of women. She then introduced the menstrual cup to the audience, its uses and importance.  The two resource persons made an attempt to convince the audience to make a smart choice for safe menstruation by choosing cloth pads, tampons and menstrual cups. Dr. Minaxi also gave a demonstration on the use of menstrual cups.
