A visit to the Verna Industrial Estate was organised for FY B.Com students in the subject of Financial Statement Analysis and Interpretation. 93 students accompanied by three faculty members – Dr. Edwin Baretto, Ms. Marjina Shaikh and Ms. Raashi Panvelkar went on the visit.
The first visit was to the factory of GMI Zharak Moulders Private Ltd. (Shakti Tanks) at 9:00 am. The students were divided into 3 batches to interact with two factory supervisors. They witnessed the manufacturing process and the assembly line. The supervisors also provided information on the two product lines – RETAIL which consist of Water tanks, Vermicompost bins, Dustbins, Septic Tanks, Barrels etc. and INDUSTRIAL which consists of custom moulded parts viz: fuel tanks, water tanks, engine cells, pallets etc. They also shared how Shakti Tanks has become the No.1 brand of water tanks in the Goan market, known for its good quality and superior design having Syntex as its competitor.
The second visit was to Monginis factory at 10:00 am. The students witnessed the process of producing fresh cakes and pastries. They also witnessed the FIFO method used for the base of the cakes which was prepared and arranged in the required manner. They witnessed cake mixtures prepared in bulk on the machine. The manager also shared how customised cakes as per customer orders are prepared using edible paper and ink. He also mentioned that they supply to all Monginis outlets all over Goa and also few places in Karnataka, due to which they have to start their operations at 4:00 am and deliver the order by 9:00 am.
The third visit was to IFB Industries Ltd. at 11:30 am. One IFB staff member welcomed the students and explained about the different testing techniques used by them for maintaining the quality of their products. She also interacted with the students as to which IFB products they own and whether they were satisfied with the same. She stated that they mainly rely on word of mouth advertising for marketing their products. She mentioned that presently they only manufacture washing machines and they will soon start with air conditioner manufacturing unit as well in Goa. After that the students were divided into 2 batches and taken around the manufacturing unit where the students observed the manufacturing process of the washing machines. The students were fascinated by the huge machines and the automated processes.
Lastly the students visited Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. at 12:30 pm. The students were again divided into 2 batches. Ms. Deeksha Shetty, Team Leader (QA) addressed the students and informed them about the various products manufactured by Coca Cola and also the different packaging used for the same. She also explained the manufacturing process in detail to the students.
The students were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the experiential learning offered by the field visit.
