Guest Lecture on Human Resource Management

The subject of HRM is offered as a compulsory paper for Semester VI at TY B.Com. The Department of Commerce organized a guest lecture by Ms Clare Noronha to provide students with an insight into the changing role of HRM in the current scenario

Ms. Noronha has over twenty years’ experience as an HR Professional, working in diverse areas of Management in the Corporate Sector, from Manufacturing to Hotels and Multinational Companies. Using her vast HR and Management experience to add value, she currently undertakes assignments in order to make a difference and give back to youngsters and society, through her association with several educational and social organizations. She is empanelled with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), School of Vocational Education, and is a faculty for their PG Diploma Course in HR &Administration, B.Voc Programs in Hotel Management and Pharma, in Goa.

Ms. Noronha took pains to make the session an interactive one. She started by asking the students to describe the concept of HRM. She highlighted the role of HRM and emphasised the challenges faced by the HR departments with reference to performance of various functions like recruitment, selection and development of manpower. Challenges relating to industrial relations, provision of welfare facilities, expansion, modernisation and automation were also discussed.

She mentioned how the changing HR environment also changes the significance and role of HRM. Today the HR department is concerned not only with issues of policy and administration but it is also getting involved in the decision-making process. The new HR practices introduced in the recent period, viz. employee empowerment, team work, flatter organisations etc. were also highlighted by the speaker

89 students of TY B.Com attended the lecture. Ms Prachi Kolamker introduced the guest speaker before the session and student Ms. Mruga Naik proposed the vote of thanks at the end of the session. This lecture was well received by the students. There was a Q&A session where the students clarified some of their doubts with the guest speaker.
