Commerce Club

In order to meet the challenging needs of the corporate world, it is not just sufficient for a student from the Commerce discipline to be theoretically sound. It is critical that students be exposed the real world so as to be equipped to deal with practical situations. Furthermore this exposure must necessarily be dynamic.  With this in mind, the Department of Commerce & Management of the College unanimously decided to establish a Commerce Club.

The Club has several objectives, the main ones being to enable students to meet practical challenges in the current business scenario and to develop leadership qualities, organizational ability and event management skills among the students. In furtherance of these objectives, the Commerce Club organized a series of events over 2 days, September 1st and 8th.

1ST SEPTEMBER 2018

The Inaugural function of Commerce Club was held on 1st September, 2018 from 9.30 to 10a.m. The function began with the Invocation Song by FY B.Com students. The dignitaries lit the traditional lamp to mark the inauguration of this unique event. Principal, Dr. Prita D. Mallya welcomed the gathering. Dr Shami Pai, Coordinator of the Commerce Club gave an overview of the Club and the activities planned for the entire year. Dr. Lina Sadekar, Head, Department of Commerce & Management introduced the Chief Guest, Mr. Pravin Pai Kakode, Managing Partner, Upgrade Technologies and a dynamic young entrepreneur who has grown his family business substantially.

Mr. Pravin Pai Kakode, an alumnus of the College, began with a quiz. In his address, he mentioned that management of human resource is more difficult than management of other resources. He also suggested that students should be active and get involved in part-time jobs along with their studies, so that they can get practical exposure. He said he was willing to provide any assistance required in this regard. It was agreed that Commerce Club members would meet him and decide the plan of action.

The Inaugural function ended with the Vote of Thanks by Mr Ivin Pereira, Student Secretary, Commerce Club.

The inauguration function was followed by on-stage and off-stage events. The on-stage event was a Business Plan Competition, while off-stage events were Poster Making Competition and Product Design Competition.

17 teams took part in the Business Plan competition. The judges for the event were Ms. Clare Noronha and CMA Rammohan Menon. The theme of the competition was “Social Entrepreneurship.”

The topics for Poster Competition were Make in India and CSR. There were 38 teams i.e. 76 students for the competition. The judges for the competition were Ms. Chaitra Bandodkar and Ms. Riya Nagvenkar, both ex-students of the College.

The theme for the Product Design Competition was Innovation: The Key to Success. There were 10 teams for the competition. The judges for the same were Ms. Larissa Vaz and Ms Priya Shanbhag, both ex-students of the College.

B.Com and BCA students put up Food Stalls on the occasion and did brisk business.

Day 2: 8th September, 2018

The day began with the elimination round of Business Quiz. 16 teams answered the elimination round of the Quiz, and 4 teams were selected for the final round. The final round of the Quiz had 4 rounds viz. Audio- Visual Round, Identification of CEO, Identification of the product, and Rapid Fire Round. Mr. Ainsley Bernard, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce & Management, was the Quiz Master.

The off-stage events held on this day were Product out of Waste Competition and Mock Trading.

21 teams participated in Product out of Waste competition. The judges for the event were Ms. Anjali Kamat and Ms. Avita Fernandes, both ex-students of the College.

Mock Trading had 52 participants. The competition was conducted by Mr. Avdhut Padwalkar, also an alumnus.

Food stalls were put up by the students of Mcom and BBA(FS) students.

M.Com and BBA(FS) students put up Food Stalls on the occasion and all the food was sold out within a few hours.

The overall teachers in charge of all the competitions were Dr. Lina Sadekar, Head, Department of Commerce & Management, and Dr. Shami Pai, Coordinator of Commerce Club.

The event was well appreciated by all the Chief Guest, judges, students and faculty members. A highlight of the event was that the Chief Guest and almost all judges are alumni of the College, all of whom are successful in their chosen fields.
