The NSS unit of VVM’s Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics, Margao celebrated 3rd International Day of Yoga on 21st June 2017 in the College Multipurpose Hall. The yoga day celebration was organised as per the direction given by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Around 250 NSS volunteers of the College participated enthusiastically in the celebration.
The hour-long programme began at 7.30 am with a prayer and chanting of Omkara. Shri Sudhakar Naik, College Director of Sports & Physical Education and a trained yoga teacher, gave an introductory talk about the importance of Yoga in today’s fast paced world. This was followed by yogic jogging by students and teachers. After yogic jogging, the participants performed several asanas, led by College sportspersons Miss. Bharti Prasad and Shri. Rajdeep Desai under the guidance of the yoga teacher Shri. Sudakar Naik. The asanas included Taadasana, Vrikshasana, Pada hastasana, Ardha Chakrasana, Trikonasana, Bhadrasana, Makarasana, Bhujangaasana, Sarvangasana, Pavana muktasana, Shavasana etc. This was followed by Kapaalabhaati, pranayama, meditation and shaanti paatha.
During the concluding function NSS chief Programme Officer Dr. Sarath Chandran appreciated the students for participating in large numbers for the programme and highlighted the importance of celebrating this day every year. Principal Dr. Prita D. Mallya said yoga should become part of our daily routine as it is important for the holistic development of the personality, particularly for students. Senior teacher and avid follower of Yoga, Smt. Nirmala Gopinathan proposed the Vote of thanks. Vice Principal Dr. Sanjay Dessai, NSS Programme Officers Dr. B.P. Sarath Chandran, Mr. Vishal Chari and Ms. Preksha Chopdekar were actively involved in the programme.
