SEBI SMART (Securities Market Trainer) Investors Programme

The Department of Commerce & Management along with the Department of Management Studies, organised the SEBI SMART (Securities Market Trainer) Investors Programme, an initiative by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), on the 13th of January 2025, from 12.30 to 1:30 PM in Hall 1, Central Block of the college. The programme aimed to enhance financial literacy and equip the 185 participating students (94 males, 91 females) across all the programmes, with essential knowledge about financial instruments, market dynamics and the importance of regulatory frameworks for smart investment decisions.

Dr. Sarika Lohana, a SEBI-empanelled Trainer, was the resource person for the programme. She covered several key aspects crucial for financial literacy. Emphasis was placed on essential concepts like asset allocation, diversification, and the power of compounding, which are critical for making informed investment decisions. Additionally, Dr. Lohana explained SEBI’s pivotal role in regulating the securities market and protecting investors’ rights. The trainer highlighted on various initiatives by SEBI that are aimed at promoting transparency and fairness in the market and the importance of understanding the rights and responsibilities of the investors. She also provided brief insights into NISM certifications and their professional benefits, inspiring students to pursue these certifications to enhance their career prospects in the financial sector.

The programme encouraged interactive discussions, allowing participants to clarify doubts and engage with the resource person, fostering a vibrant learning atmosphere.

Ms. Cinola Vaz, Asst. Prof in Commerce was the faculty coordinator from the BBA (FS) department. The teacher coordinators from B.Com Programme were Ms. Swati Bhat and Ms. Pooja Shanbhag, Asst. Prof in Commerce.

Expected Outcomes of the activity

Students became familiar with SEBI’s role in regulating the securities market and gained a deeper understanding of the importance of regulatory frameworks in protecting investors and promoting transparency. They were introduced to NISM certifications and their benefits, inspiring them to pursue professional qualifications to enhance their career prospects in finance and securities markets. The programme also helped students develop analytical skills by enabling them to evaluate various investment options, understand market dynamics, and assess risks effectively. Furthermore, participants learned essential investment concepts such as asset allocation, diversification, and compounding, equipping them to make informed and smart financial decisions.
