The NSS Unit in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education & Sports, organized an impactful awareness session on Drug Abuse as part of the “Mission Drugs Free Campus” initiative. The event took place on 10th August 2024, from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Hall No. 2 of the College Central Block, with 177 students in attendance.
The session commenced with an address by Vice Principal (Academics), Dr. Edwin Barreto. Asst. Prof. Mr. Sanjay Velip, the NSS Program Officer-in-Charge, introduced the resource person for the session, Ms. Priyanka Garodi, a Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) from the Anti-Narcotic Cell in Margao, Goa. Vice Principal (Administration), Dr. Shami Pai welcomed Ms. Garodi with a symbolic gesture by presenting her with a potted plant.
Ms. Priyanka Garodi delivered an insightful and comprehensive presentation, covering various critical aspects of drug abuse. She outlined the extensive countermeasures implemented by the Anti-Narcotic Cell, which include prevention programs aimed at deterring drug use, counselling and support services for those affected, and stringent enforcement actions against drug trafficking. Ms. Garodi also provided an overview of the legal framework surrounding drug abuse, emphasizing the severe laws and penalties associated with drug possession and trafficking. In addition to the legal perspective, Ms. Garodi highlighted the physical and behavioural indicators of drug abuse, such as noticeable changes in appearance, mood swings, and declining academic or work performance.
The event was compared by Dhrii Bene, and was coordinated by a dedicated team of faculty members, including Mr. Sanjay Velip (NSS PO In-charge), Mr. Ainsley Bernard (NSS PO), Ms. Akshada Gaonkar (NSS PO), Ms. Kalpana Parab (NSS PO), Ms. Pooja Gaonkar (NSS PO), Mr. Dewaraj Hirekurabar (CDPE & S), and Mr. Saurab Raikar (Instructor in Physical Education). Their collective efforts ensured the smooth execution of the event. Overall, the awareness session significantly advanced the mission of fostering a drug-free campus by providing valuable information and engaging students in meaningful discussions about drug abuse.
Expected Outcome of the Activity:
The session on drug abuse successfully raised awareness about the dangers and signs of drug abuse, provided detailed information on preventive measures and legal consequences, and enhanced participants’ ability to identify early warning signs. By engaging students, the event aimed to foster a stronger commitment to maintaining a drug-free campus and promote active participation in drug prevention efforts.
