The IPR Cell of the Institution Innovation Council (IIC) of the College, organized a session on ‘Decoding Geographical Indications: An Overview’ on 16th February 2024 in Class No. 204 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Resource Person for the session was Ms. Smita Bandekar, Assistant Professor in Law. The objective of conducting the session was to acquaint students and increase their knowledge of Geographical Indications – one of the major types of Intellectual Property Rights. Ms. Bandekar commenced her session by educating students on the meaning of Geographical Indications. She proceeded by enlightening the students on the types, uses, and rights provided by Geographical Indications along with various examples. She expanded their insights by informing them that Geographical Indications also include a variety of concepts used in international treaties and national/regional jurisdictions, such as, Appellation of Origin (AO), Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI). She also competently differentiated between Geographical Indications and Trademarks. On the whole, the session was extremely informative, providing students an opportunity to supplement their knowledge of Geographical Indications. 36 students attended the session, which was organized and coordinated by Ms. Lizette D’Costa, Assistant Professor in Economics & Banking, Convenor, IPR Cell.
