The 5 Kar Naval Unit NCC organized the MENU Camp – Ocean Sailing Expedition in Udupi from September 8th to 22nd, 2023. The primary aim of this camp was to provide cadets with firsthand experience in sailing and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for this sport.
The camp commenced with a swimming test, where cadets were required to swim 50 meters and float for 3 minutes. Following this, cadets attended classes on sailing, where they learned about boat safety, different types of sailboats, and the terminology used in sailing. They also gained practical knowledge on hoisting, adjusting sails, rigging, and unrigging sails. Cadets were divided into groups to practice rigging and unrigging sails, allowing them to understand the process and learn various knots used in tying sails.
Sailing activities took place at Udyavara Boat pool, Udupi, where cadets were further divided into three groups. These groups included both swimmers and non-swimmers, ensuring that every cadet had the opportunity to experience sailing, regardless of their swimming abilities.
The camp also incorporated social service activities, such as visiting an orphanage and conducting street plays on anti-drug and cybercrime awareness. As part of physical training, cadets embarked on a trek to Kodachadri Hills in Kollur, covering a distance of 8 km. Additionally, qualified swimmers had the opportunity to sail around Malpe port, including a visit to St. Mary’s Island.
The camp concluded with a campfire, followed by cultural nights and an awards ceremony to recognize the achievements of the cadets. PO cadet Shagufata Manjalapur represented our college with 12 other cadets from Goa.
