Understanding Visual Language for Story Board

The Department of English and Communication organized a session on ‘Understanding Visual Language for Story Board’ on 6th March 2023 for FY B.Com students of the College. The Resource Person for the session was Mr. Sandesh Gaundalkar, who conducted the session for 2 batches of FY students.Students Ms. Kajal Kadam and Ms. Nivita Naik introduced the Resource Person. 150 students of FYB.Com attended the session.

Digital Story Telling (DST) which is part of the FYB.Com Business Communication course, aims to ignite creativity in the students by allowing them to explore the topic of movie making, which is a digital form of narrating a story with pictures. This also requires students to prepare a story board which is more like a movie blue print. This session was conducted with an aim of broadening the perspective of the students and giving them fundamental knowledge of a storyboard and movie making.

Mr. Sandesh Gaundalkar is a Communication Designer, Watercolor artist, urban sketcher and an educator. He has 20 plus years of experience in Graphic Design, Visualization / Concept development, branding, Digital illustrations & Animation. He has also worked as an independent illustrator and storyboard artist for various TV commercials and films such as “OM SHANTI OM”. He has been the winner of Annual State Art Award by Kala Academy (Govt. of Goa) for 1999, 2000, 2007, 2010, 2018 and 2022.

The Resource Person began the session by introducing the concept, uses, purpose and importance of storyboard. In his presentation, he explained the concepts of Camera Shots, Lights, and composition of a movie. He presented a clear idea about the anatomy of a storyboard and how to communicate with pictures through situation, landscapes, sequence and scene staging. He also elaborated on shot selection and its types in movie making. While explaining the three Ws of visual scripting, he emphasised on establishing the characters in the storyboard and the final movie. General rules of making a story board were also listed. Lastly, all this was explained with the help of videos from familiar movie scenes.

The students showed great enthusiasm, asking questions related to different aspects of visual story telling. The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Ms. Samiksha Vengurlekar, Dept. of English and Communication. The feedback received from the students was overwhelming.
