Eco Week 3.0

The Economics Club of the Department of Economics & Banking organized Eco-Week 3.0 from 16th to 20th May 2022 for the students across the M.Com, PGDFT, B.Com, BBA(FS), B.Voc.(ST) and BCA programmes of the College. A plethora of activities were held over the duration of one week which aimed to stimulate the interest of students in economic issues while offering opportunities for learning beyond the classroom. The events for Eco-Week 3.0 included Investonomics (Mock Trading), Spellbinder (Just a Minute Elocution Competition), Regard Before You Discard (Best Out of Waste Competition), Eco-Frame (Photography Competition), Eco-Wiz (Quiz), Combat of the Intellect (Debate) and concluded with a valedictory function. 149 students of the above mentioned programs participated in this event.

 

Investonomics (Mock Trading)

“Investonomics” was a mock trading competition conducted virtually using the Stock Market Challenge (DSIJ) App during Eco Week 3.0. The participants were given Rs.10,00,000 as the starting cash balance which had to be invested in stocks with the aim of maximizing returns.

This event was held from 16th May 2022 to 19th May 2022. The student coordinator for the event was Mr. Mihir Suchak while the teacher coordinator was Assistant Professor Ms. Stesa Elsie Pereira.  59 students participated in this event. The winners were as follows:

1st Place- Mr. Altaz Khan (FY B.Com)

2nd Place- Mr. Akhil Kamat (SY B.Com)

3rd Place Mr. Ashwed Mendes (FY B.Com)

 

Spellbinder (Just a Minute Elocution Competition)

“Spellbinder” which was a One Minute Elocution Competition was held on 16th May 2022 in Smart Classroom from 12.00 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. The aim of this event was to test speakers on the skills of thinking clearly, speaking persuasively and listening to the opinions of others critically and constructively. The competition gave students a platform to showcase and utilise their oratory skills for an impromptu speech. Participants were given different topics relevant to economics 10 minutes prior to the competition. They had to pick a chit on which the topic was mentioned and deliver a speech for the duration of one minute on the same. 20 students participated in the same. 20 students participated in this competition.

Dr. Sheetal Arondekar, Ms. Samiksha Vengurlekar and Mr. Ainsley Bernard were the judges for the competition. Ms. Mayuri Pednekar and Ms. Blessy Sammy compered the programme. Ms. Sita Gupta and Ms. Mayuri Pednekar were the student coordinators while the teacher coordinator was Assistant Professor Ms. Poorva Gude.

The winners were as follows:

1st Place: Aaron Goes (TY BBA)

2nd Place: Shreya Revankar (TY BCom)

3rd Place: Jackson Rodrigues (TY BCom)

 

Regard Before You Discard (Best Out of Waste Competition)

Regard Before You Discard (Best Out of Waste Competition) was the third event of the Eco Week 3.0. The objective of the event was to bring out creativity among the students. There were 08 teams which contained 2 participants each. They were instructed to use waste materials like Tetra packs, bottles, newspapers, old utensils, jute materials or any items that would otherwise thrown away. The participants were given a time limit of 1 hour to create their product after which they had to present it before the judges. The event was held in the Smart classroom. The student coordinator was Ms. Parmesh Chauhan while the teacher coordinator was Assistant Professor Ms. Pretty Louiza Pereira. 8 teams comprising of 16 students in each, participated in this competition.

The winners were as follows:

1st Place: Vishal Revankar (M.Com) and Vivek Dessai (M.Com)

2nd Place: Gourish Bhatikar (TY B.Com) and Aemisha Azavedo (SY B.Com)

3rd Place: Ananya Prabhu (SY B.Com) and Avisek Kumar Sharma (SY B.Com).

 

Eco-Frame (Photography Competition)

There were several events which were conducted during Eco Week 3.0, one of which was “Eco- Frame” (Photography Competition) which was held on 18th May 2022. Eco frame aimed to use photography as a powerful medium of expression to communicate messages about economics and inspire the creation and dissemination of these images. The theme of the event was “Capture the economic moment”. Here, the participants were told to submit one picture along with a description that captures an economic concept, event or news by the submission date which was 18th May 2022. The main objective of Eco Frame (Photography Competition) was to make a connection between economics and the real world. The photographs were judged based on creativity, description, visual quality and overall impact. The judges for the event were Ms. Vinaya Kirloskar, Ms. Yugandhara Joshi and Ms. Amba Prabhu. A total of 16 participants were a part of the event. The student coordinator for “Eco Frame” was Ms. Sejal Chari while the teacher coordinator was Mr. Sanjay Velip. 16 students participated in this competition.

Eco-Wiz (Quiz)

Eco-Wiz was a quiz competition held on 18th May 2022 at 12:00 p.m. in the smart classroom. It aimed to test the knowledge of participants in the field of international economics. 15 teams of 2 students each (30 students) participated in the same. The quiz consisted of 3 rounds. The first round was a preliminary written round in which the participants were given 10 minutes to answer 20 multiple choice questions. The top 10 teams subsequently qualified for round two where they had to solve a crossword puzzle based on the international economy. The top 5 teams qualifying this round then proceeded to the final round which included identifying the tagline, logo, advertisement, voice and personality that was presented before the participants. Ms. Shreya Revankar was the quizmaster and conducted the final round of the quiz efficiently. The student coordinators for this event were Ms. Shreya Revankar and Ms. Roshni Khatun while the teacher coordinator was Assistant Professor Ms. Stesa Pereira.15 teams of 2 students each (30 students) participated in this competition.

The winners were as follows:

1st Place- Team Pound: Aaron Goes (TY BBA) and Hayden Fernandes (FY BBA)

2nd Place- Team Dollar: Gourish Bhatikar (TY B.Com) and Jai Patel (TY B.Com)

3rd Place- Team Rupee: Abhishek Patel (TY B.Com) and Mihir Suchak (TY B.Com)

 

Combat of the Intellect (Debate Competition)

The Economics Club, organized a Debate competition – ‘Combat of the Intellect’ as a part of Eco Week 3.0. The competition was held, in two rounds. For the preliminary round, the topic was ‘Is Online Education Better than Traditional Education?’ wherein the participants were required to send a video by the 16th of May 2022, of themselves putting forth their arguments for and against the given topic. Four teams participated in the preliminary round. Two teams subsequently qualified for the final round which was held on 19th May 2022 from 12:00 noon to 01:30 p.m.in the College Smart classroom. The topic given for the final round was ‘Can Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Intelligence?’ Team 1 comprised Mr. Niraj Naik and Mr. Kris Rego of SY B.Voc(ST), while Team 2 comprised Ms. Petalia Coutinho and Mr. Jackson Rodrigues of TY B.Com. The teams had to face each other for the finals through two rounds. Round 1, wherein Team 1 had to speak for the topic, while Team 2 had to speak against it. Round 2 enabled discussion wherein each team had to pose a maximum of five questions to the opponents. This round was followed by questions from the judges. The winners of the competition were Team 1 comprising Mr. Niraj Naik and Mr. Kris Rego of SY B.Voc (ST). The judges for the competition were Asst. Prof. Swati Bhat and Asst. Prof. Seema Dharani. The student coordinator for the event was Mr. Aryan Shaikh while the teacher coordinator was Assistant Professor Ms. Lizette D’Costa.

Valedictory Function

Eco Week 3.0 concluded with a Valedictory Function which was held on 20th May 2022 at 12:15 p.m. in the Smart Classroom. The Valedictory function was compered by Ms. Luvica Fernandes, the student secretary of the Economics Club. The function started with a brief about the different events that took place during Eco Week 3.0 which was given by the overall student coordinator Ms. Riti Dhaka. This was followed by the announcement of winners and prize distribution by Dr. Lira M. Gama, Head of the Department of Economics & Banking. Mr. Gourish Bhatikar from TY B.Com was declared as the Economist of the Year 2021-22.The winners received trophies and certificates. Participation certificates were also provided to all the participants for each event of Eco Week 3.0. The participants then provided their feedback about their experience during Eco Week 3.0. The feedback received was positive and Eco Week 3.0 was appreciated by the participants as an event which offered an opportunity that tested different competencies through the variety of events that were organized. The Valedictory Function concluded with the vote of thanks which was proposed by Assistant Professor Ms. Stesa Pereira, Convenor of the Economics Club.
