Session on “Gender Sensitivity”

The Life Skills Committee organized a virtual session on the topic “Gender Sensitivity” for First Year B.Com students on 22nd June 2021 from 12:20 to 01:30 pm via Google Meet platform.

The objective of the session was to sensitize the students on gender issues and to create awareness about the actions that constitute sexual harassment and also to enable them to act boldly in such situations. The Resource Person for the session was Adv. Siddhi Parodkar, Practicing Advocate.

At the outset Asst. Professor Marjina Shaikh welcomed the Resource Person and the participants. This was followed by the introduction of the Speaker by Ms. Alizia Fernandes a student from FY B.Com D. The Resource Person started the session by explaining the concept of Gender Sensitivity. She also highlighted the significance of gender equality in maintaining a balance of life. Adv. Siddhi Parodkar mentioned that not only women but men also face the problem of gender inequality and explained about the roles of gender in a society. She involved the students by asking them how they would react in a given situation and explained the various actions that constitute sexual harassment. She also stressed upon Articles 14, 15 and 21 of the Indian Constitution and stated that the law treats men and women equally. She educated the students about the POSH Act and narrated the reason behind the passing of the POSH Act and also informed them about the Internal Complaints Committee in the College.

To conclude, she requested the students to read Articles 14, 15 and 16 of the Indian Constitution. The session ended on a positive note and the students agreed that every gender has the right to be treated with dignity and respect. The session was attended by 34 FY B.Com students.

The session ended with the Vote of Thanks proposed by FY B.Com student, Ms. Jeslinda Azavedo.
