5-Day Student Development Programme

The Commerce Club of the Department of Commerce and Management organized a 5-day Online Student Development Programme (SDP) from 12:30 to 01:30 pm from March 1-5, 2021, in association with Bombay Stock Exchange Brokers’ Forum. The broad theme of the SDP was “Fundamentals of Stock Market”, and the resource Person was Dr. Aditya Srinivas. 

Day 1: On Day 1, the program began with a welcome address by Vice Principal Dr. Rodney D’Silva, followed by the introduction of the Resource Person by Assistant Professor Marjina Shaikh. The topic for the day was “Working of Stock Market”. The Speaker started the session with a brief introduction about the importance of stock markets. The session included various topics related to the working of stock exchanges such as working of broker, trading account, demat account, risk management, KYC of clients and difference between investment and speculation. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session. 70 students attended the session.

Day 2: The topic for day 2 was “Fundamental Analysis”, wherein the Resource Person explained about the various factors that one needs to consider before investing. He also elaborated on economic analysis, industry analysis and company analysis with case studies, followed by a Q&A session. This session saw the highest attendance by 86 students.

Day 3: Dr. Aditya started the session on “Mutual Funds” with a brief presentation on types of mutual funds, advantages, working of mutual funds, role in wealth creation, SIP and its benefit, Mutual fund industry scenario. During the Q&A session he interacted with the students and explained about the importance and need to invest in mutual funds. He also stressed on the benefits of investing early to get the maximum returns. 68 students attended.

Day 4: On the 4th day Dr. Srinivas demonstrated the Terminal Operations on Bombay Stock Exchange. He discussed about the top 30 companies on BSE and the strategies to invest in the stock market. He also elaborated upon portfolio diversification and the extent of diversification. The session, attended by 67 students, ended with a Q&A round.

Day 5: The topic for the last session was “Derivatives Market” and was attended by 69 students. Dr. Aditya elaborated upon the concept of trading in commodities as a derivative instrument, types of commodities traded, risk exposure, factors pertaining to the growth of commodities trade. He then demonstrated the live trading method to students.  He also explained that trading in derivatives requires huge amount of capital and a high risk appetite.

B.Com Coordinator, Dr. Edwin Baretto proposed the Vote of Thanks. The students were asked to fill the feedback forms and answer an online quiz based on which 69 students were issued e-certificates. Assistant Professor Marjina Shaikh moderated the sessions.
